I have never used an external hard drive. I have uploaded and downloaded a few things to a thumb drive for back-and-forth transfers, but never backed up EVERYTHING I have. “My Book” was super easy to use. I had to connect ONE cable to the computer, and ONE to a power source.
Simple. Once I did that, I was prompted, step-by-step. I think the entire operation took… oh, maybe ten minutes? Ten minutes included the time it took to install the drivers, check for updates, download all of our files, and EVERYTHING. After emptying my entire picture and video library, we still have 1.8 TBs of free space. I can’t imagine ever actually filling this bad boy to capacity.

If you’re like me, you have tons of pictures and documents on your computer taking up space. I remember once copying all my pics on to CD-Rs just to make more room on my hard drive. Well, the WD My Book Essential takes care of this and much more. I can easily back up my pics, my docs and my music and video files. The first major plus I noticed is that the WD My Book needed no formatting. I just plugged it in and it was ready to go! That always brings a smile to my face! If you want super easy, fast, reliable storage, there really aren’t any other
comparable options. Sure you can set-up a SAN and iddle around with it for a while to get it going. However, if you don’t want to mess with it or don’t have that type of tech expertise, this is the ONLY choice. The technology “just works”! Maybe Apple should buy them!

First and foremost, I think the product is fantastic!
The ease of setup really caught me by surprise; I had expected to follow the four simple steps outlined in the quickstart guide and then end up on the phone with tech support as is all to often the case with products that ‘claim’ to be fool proof. – What a surprise!

I’m extremely satisfied with this product. Easy to set up, transfer rates are fast, the machine looks great, and is small. I just got it yesterday, and transfered about 45GB of data, and plan on moving 85GB this weekend.

Nice little device. Does it’s job and does it great!
What i really love about this black box is that it is linux based and totally customizable. There are numerous blogs and wikis about this particular device, a lot of experienced people can give you feedback if you encounter any trouble.
